Coffee and climate action: Lobbying Wills MP Peter Khalil in Pascoe Vale

Saturday morning in Pascoe Vale and Wills MP Peter Khalil caught up to discuss issues with several constituents at the George Jones Eatery (named after Pascoe Vale’s first shopkeeper in 1841)
Climate action was a top priority for the citizens that had come along, although the ALP’s refugee policy was also mentioned.
Jane presented a copy of the IPCC 1.5C report to Peter Khalil, and Climate Action Moreland Convebnor John Englart also presented a copy of The Elephant in the Sky report (PDF) to him on aviation emissions.
The people from Brunswick Getup! repeatedly raised the need for a future Labor Government to Stop the Adani Carmichael mine. The IPCC 1.5C report emphasises the even more urgent need to stop new coal mines being built and to start to phase out coal production and coal fired power.
While Peter Khalil has come out opposing the mine, Labor leader Bill Shorten still seems to be sitting on the fence. This is very problematic.
The IPCC 1.5C report also provided an opportunity for raising the prospect of the need to phase out Australia’s export coal industry. This will not be done overnight and will need substantial structural programs for mining workers and communities providing just transition outcomes. These are the sort of issues that need to be raised in caucus by our MP for Wills.
The Australian Government tax subsidies for fossil fuels – currently running at about $11 billion per annum, was also raised as an issue which the next Labor Government needs to take up.
Peter Khalil MP is currently on the Labor back bench. His current positions include being a member of the House of Representatives Standing committee on Environment and Energy from 15.9.16; Industry, Innovation, Science and Resources Committee from 15.9.16, and the Joint Standing committee on Trade and Investment Growth from 15.9.16.
He is also the ALP Caucus Secretary for the Federal Parliamentary Labor Party, from 2016.

How convenient Peter says he doesn’t support ADANI & Bill says it’s OKAY if it passes all the hoops. And which way will Peter vote in those circumstances?
