Snap protests for climate action and to stop Adani were called in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns for Saturday 8th December that attracted thousands of people.
According to School Strike for Climate Action some 15,000 people marched in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Cairns. Castlemaine school striker and Melbourne speaker 14 yo Harriet O’Shea Carre said: “If Bill Shorten and the Labor Party care about young people and our future, then their party must commit to #StopAdani’s coal mine and they must do it now.”
Kelly Albion, campaigns and communications director with the Australian Youth Climate Coalition said: “If Labor doesn’t oppose Adani now, it will haunt them every day of the Federal election campaign and beyond. We will put climate change front and centre and make politicians’ position on Adani the litmus test for whether they have what it takes to stop the climate crisis.”
That youthful energy featured in Saturday’s protest in Melbourne in the number and variety of home-made signs, in the sit-in occupation of the intersection in front of Flinders Street Station.
