Comparing Party policies on climate against Consistency with Paris Agreement 1.5C Goal in #Willsvotes and Victorian Senate

Kids protest outside Peter Khalil’s Wills electorate office on Sydney Road, urge Vote Climate

Climate Action Moreland has done an assessment of the published climate, environment and energy policies of the Political parties and candidates standing in the Wills electorate for 2022 and whether they are consistent with the science of climate change and the speed of transition required, and meeting the targets of the Paris Agreement.

We acknowledge climate policy is only one lens to view these Political Parties, but given it is a climate emergency we think it is a pretty important lens. About three quarters of Wills voters think climate action is a high priority. We also organised with Coburg Uniting Church and Neighbours United for Climate Action a Meet the candidates forum on 26 April, with a live recording. Climate risk is already affecting properties and insurance premiums around Australia, including in Moreland.

Our analysis on ranking the parties has been supported by the assessment of Climate Analytics, a leading international climate science and policy analysis NGO..

Addressing climate change is a top priority for citizens in the Wills Electorate in Moreland as well as across Australia.
That is why Climate Action Moreland, Neighbours United for Climate Action and Coburg Uniting Church have organised a Meet the candidates forum with a focus on climate and sustainability on Tuesday 26 April at Coburg Uniting Church Hall.

Polling done in every electorate of Australia in March 2022 asked people living in Australia about the
cost of climate action and the results are optimistic. Over 15,000 people were surveyed, which allowed a statistical sample from every electorate. The results in Wills are above the national average.

2019-03-05-SydneyRd_streetParty-CAMoreland05

Climate Emergency placard

This is a list of candidates who have acknowledged with a photo that we are in a climate Emergency.

Moreland Council formerly acknowledged and declared a climate emergency in September 2018 and since then have been incorporating a climate emergency framework into Council policies.

Candidates may download the Climate Emergency declaration, print it out, sign and take an image to send to us to include on this page. We’ll even accept home drawn signs acknowleding the climate emergency. We really aren’t fussed about the neatness of the sign its the action and commitment that is important.

Moreland Council 2020 election – candidate forums and climate info

Moreland Council election

Moreland Council, along with many other municipal and shire councils in Victoria, will go to the polls on 24 October 2020. Nominations close at 12 noon, 32 days before the election day on 22 September. (See Knowyour Council guide to Elections)
Enrolment closed at 4 pm on Friday 28 August 2020. You can check your enrolment at the Victorian Electoral Commission and update details.

Postal voting starts 6 October, 2020. The election will be by postal ballot. Please use the hastag #MorelandVotes on election social media.

Climate Action Moreland surveyed candidates, asking them to sign a climate emergency declaration, which is in keeping with the existing declaration by Council in 2018. Forums for candidates were run for each of the three Council Wards.

Responses will be published on posts for each ward that will contain the list of candidates, party affiliation or alignment (if any), public contact information (website, facebook, twitter if available), and their answers. We may also add extra information or links to 3rd party websites where we think it empowers voters on making an informed decision at the ballot box.

Just Transition: An Idea Whose Time has Finally Come?

Following the recent federal election, which suggested that the electorate is becoming more polarised about coal, everybody seems to be talking about “just transition”. Colin Long, the Just Transition Officer at Trades Hall, told us he has been inundated with calls. The National Union of Workers kicked off with a statement. The ABC is talking about it. Environment Victoria has released a blogpost, and has made it a focus of their Beyond Coal campaign. And some in Labor are talking about a Green New Deal.

Climate Action Moreland has long argued for just transition to be a key demand of the climate movement. But we need to do more. We can start by fleshing out what this means and how we should incorporate it into our campaigns.
