Inaugural Moreland Climate CUP highlights Race to Zero Emissions – Melbourne joins Global Day of action #COP26

A few months ago the idea was floated in the Moreland Climate Coalition to hold an event around Melbourne Cup day, which also coincided with the UN Climate Change conference, COP26, meeting in Glasgow.
But at that early stage all of Melbourne was in lockdown due to the pandemic with limits on public gatherings, with the vaccination program delayed due to Federal Government vaccine ordering incompetence, and was still ramping up.
When we started organising we didn’t know how many people could meet for a protest under the public health regulations. But as vaccination rate grew rapidly 30 people became the number of fully vaccinated people to meet publicly. Three covidsafe events were held in Moreland, with other climate protests in the city and at St Kilda as part of the Global day of action called by the COP26 Coalition in Glasgow.

At Moreland Council meeting on 12 May 2021 a compromise motion was put forward which dumped the proposal for a synthetic soccer pitch for Hosken Reserve.
This is a substantial win against synthetic turf for Hosken Reserve. This issue was won by determined local residents. We are proud that our Climate Action Moreland submission highlighted real issues such as life-cycle carbon footprint and urban heat island impact with synthetic turf, and assisted arguments put forward by residents against the original proposal.
The Conversations Caravan Engagement report (Except of Hosken Reserve item and Engagement Report PDF) basically highlighted and validated the concerns of residents, particularly the inappropriateness of an expanding sports hub in the middle of a residential area.

Protest at Coburg Tradelink Plumbing: a local link to Adani coal mine
On Saturday Climate Action Moreland participated in an action outside Tradelink Plumbing Supplies in Sussex Street, Coburg. It was one of at least 25 protests around Australia tyargeting Tradelink. Tradelink is owned by Fletcher Building, a New Zealand multinational which is seeking contracts to supply materials for construction of the Adani Carmichael coal mine.
We were encouraging customers to boycott the store in future. When we arrived we went inside and spoke briefly to the staff and gave them information on our protest, and urged them to pass our message up the line.

Melbourne turns out to demand climate action in #globalclimatestrike
According to the Student strike organisers, well over 330,000 people attended the climate strike across Australia, more than double the March 2019 turnout.
Melbourne saw 100,000 people in the Tereasury Gardens and march along a 1.2 kilometre route through the CBD.
Sydney had 80,000 people in the Sydney Domain. There were also 30,000 people in Brisbane, 20,000 people in Adelaide, 20,000 people in Hobart, 15,000 people in Canberra, and 10,000 people in Perth. There were actions by Students & workers in over 115 Australian cities & towns.
Globally, over 4 million globally participate in world’s largest climate mobilisation. This included 250,000 people marching in new York City, where Greta Thunberg addressed the enormous crowd.
The essential demands of the Student Strike for Climate in Australia were: no new fossil fuels including stopping Adani mine, 100 percent renewables by 2030, and money for just transitions & jobs.
