Climate strike students visit Peter Khalil MP in Coburg

Climate Strike students visit Peter Khalil MP in Coburg

On Friday 22 February climate strike students from Castlemaine paid a visit to Moreland’s Federal Labor MP, Peter Khalil, at his Coburg office.

Peter Khalil has signed the climate emergency and also stated he opposes the Adani coal mine going ahead.

But the primary demands of the student climate strikers go beyond stopping Adani. They also include a target of 100 per cent renewables by 2030, and no new coal and gas projects.

The IPCC 1.5C report published last October made it clear we need to rapidly phaseout coal, and make rapid major transformations across all sectors of the economy such as agriculture, transport and stationary energy to meet the 1.5C Paris climate target.

Students are schooling politicians on climate change

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack lecturing students to stay at school and not #climatestrike

Students are going on strike around Australia, and globally on Friday March 15. Their action comes after 30 years of little action in reducing emissions with the world now facing a climate crisis.

But some politicians, mostly from the conservative side of politics, say they should stay in school.

Victorian Liberal Senator Scott Ryan targeted over Australian climate inaction

FidaysforFuture outside Liberal Senator Scott Ryan’s office

Inspired by Greta Thunberg climate strike in Sweden and Caroline Danaher outside Sara Henderson’s office near Geelong, Climate Action Moreland convenor John Englart started a Persistent Presence, Fridays for Future action outside Liberal Senator for Victoria Scott Ryan’s office in Moonee Ponds. Senator Ryan is a memeber of the Liberal National Party Government that has seen 5 years of climate inaction. He is currently President of the Australian Senate.

The first presence outside Senator Ryan office was during a heatwave with the maximum temperature that day reaching 45.2 degrees Celsius at Essendon Airport. Jane Morton’s book on climate emergency messaging and a leaflet on why we need to Stop Adani were left with staff in Senator Ryan’s office.

Snap Action: #StopAdani Saturday 8 December

Treat the climate crisis as a crisis – Stop Adani

The fight to stop Adani’s coal mine is at a critical turning point.

The coal corporation has announced that they are self financing the project, and want to start digging coal before Christmas. By Adani saying that they have the money to start work immediately, it looks like they are trying to pressure the government to wrap up the approvals process before the next federal election.

Which means we need to put pressure on our politicians to act now.

Melbourne school kids climate strike on November 30

School strike – climate strike

School kids in Melbourne are going on climate strike this Friday, 30 November, and gathering outside the Victorian Parliament.

Climate Action Moreland endorses this action by youth challenging our leaders to ramp up action on emissions reduction, renewables rollout as part of the energy transition, more funding to public transport and cycling to increase transport mode share change and reduce transport emissions.

We have a climate emergency that needs rapid transformative action. The recent IPCC 1.5C report makes that abundantly clear.
