The power in the Senate is likely to be held by crossbenchers. The order of your preferences could be important for determining who is elected. Make sure you preference based on climate policy from strong candidates to weak. Preference at least 6. Voteclimate recommends to mark at least 16 boxes above the line to minimise your preferences being exhausted.

Local residents at the Wills candidates forum on climate and sustainability were dismayed – horrified even – that local Labor MP Peter Khalil is now supporting government funding for the expansion of the fossil fuel industry in Australia.

Peter Khalil was speaking to a capacity crowd at the Merlynston Progress Hall on Monday April 29. Within one hour, he had gone from calling for immediate action to address the climate emergency to endorsing the expansion of Australia’s natural gas industry. (more…)
Open letter on unprecedented threat to health by climate change #climateelection

Climate Action Moreland have signed on to an Open Letter to Political Parties and Candidates for the Australian Federal Election 2019, raising the issue that Climate change poses an unprecedented threat to the health of people in Australia and across the world.
The Climate and Health Alliance have circulated the following open letter. We note that Federal Labor have committed to introducing a National Strategy based on the Framework for a National Strategy on Climate, Health and Well-being for Australia if elected to govern. The Australian Greens also support a National Strategy.
A climate scorecard has also been produced for the election by the Climate and Health Alliance, after analysing the policies of the three main political parties on climate change and health. Climate-Health Scorecard: Coalition earns 0/8, Federal Labor 4.5/8 and Greens 8/8

2019 Wills votes Climate Forum
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has visited the Governor General and called the Federal election for Saturday May 18. This is widely seen as a climate election, with environmental issues and addressing the climate crisis up there with health, education and taxation.

Victorian Liberal Senator Scott Ryan targeted over Australian climate inaction

Inspired by Greta Thunberg climate strike in Sweden and Caroline Danaher outside Sara Henderson’s office near Geelong, Climate Action Moreland convenor John Englart started a Persistent Presence, Fridays for Future action outside Liberal Senator for Victoria Scott Ryan’s office in Moonee Ponds. Senator Ryan is a memeber of the Liberal National Party Government that has seen 5 years of climate inaction. He is currently President of the Australian Senate.
The first presence outside Senator Ryan office was during a heatwave with the maximum temperature that day reaching 45.2 degrees Celsius at Essendon Airport. Jane Morton’s book on climate emergency messaging and a leaflet on why we need to Stop Adani were left with staff in Senator Ryan’s office.

Greens Brunswick MP Tim Read identifies climate action priority in first speech
Greens MP for Brunswick Tim Read with supporters due to make first speech
The new Greens MP for Brunswick, Tim Read, identified climate action as one of the priority areas he wants to pursue in his first speech to the Victorian Parliament. Tim Read was elected at the November 2018 state election to join Greens colleagues Ellen Sandell (Melbourne) and Sam Hibbins (Prahran) in the Legislative Assembly.

Vote Climate in the Victorian state election 2018
Our index page for the Victorian state election in 2018 and our campaign on climate change and climate action. Climate Action Moreland campaigns on climate issues for the state electorates of Brunswick, Pascoe Vale and Broadmeadows, and the Northern Metro Region (Upper House).
Update Note: 29 November: Brunswick count continuing with the Greens candidate Tim Read 350 votes ahead of Labor’s Cindy O’Connor. Pascoe Vale count continuing with sitting MP Labor’s Lizzie Blandthorn likely to be easily returned on preferences. Pascoe Vale was previously a safe Labor seat.
In the Upper House it is likely the Greens will be reduced from 5 MLCs to just 1 MLC (Samantha Ratnam), due to the tight preferencing of minor parties using group voting tickets. The Counting is continuing for the Legislative Council.

Call to end logging in Victorian Forests by Indigenous nations #Voteforests
Sovereign indigenous clans ifrom Taungurong, Wurundjeri and Gunai Kurnai statement on sovereignty, land and forests
Aboriginal clans and families from the Taungurong, Wurundjeri and Gunai Kurnai peoples read a statement on sovereignty, land use and forests which called for a moratorium on the logging of Victorian forests by the Victorian Government. Conservation of Victoria’s native forests raises concerns over presercving our water, a safe climate and preventing species extinction.
The statement was met with a standing ovation from the packed crowd in the Brunswick Town Hall who had come to hear and discuss the Future of Victoria’s Forests in an event organised by Brunswick Friends of the forests.

Climate survey of Candidates in #Vicvotes #Brunswick #PascoeVale #Broadmeadows
Climate Action Moreland has conducted surveys of candidates for the Victorian State Election in November 2018 for the electorates of Brunswick, Pascoe Vale, and Broadmeadows. Candidates were emailed the survey based on the Candidate email details supplied to the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC). Survey was sent Monday 12 November, and a reminder on Friday 16 November.
