More climate ambition and Stop Adani a clear message from Wills Climate Forum to Mark Butler and Peter Khalil

Wills Climate Forum

Wills Labor MP Peter Khalil finally was able to organise a climate forum for his electorate centred on the City of Moreland, with shadow minister for climate and energy Mark Butler MP attending.

It was clear from the audience questions that although Labor is on the right track with climate policy, many citizens of Moreland think more ambition is needed given the climate crisis and the need for climate emergency planning. This was made clear by the most recent science in the IPCC 1.5C report published in October 2018. Most also want to see a clear statement and commitment to stop the Adani mine, and in fact any new coal or gas projects.

Climate strike students visit Peter Khalil MP in Coburg

Climate Strike students visit Peter Khalil MP in Coburg

On Friday 22 February climate strike students from Castlemaine paid a visit to Moreland’s Federal Labor MP, Peter Khalil, at his Coburg office.

Peter Khalil has signed the climate emergency and also stated he opposes the Adani coal mine going ahead.

But the primary demands of the student climate strikers go beyond stopping Adani. They also include a target of 100 per cent renewables by 2030, and no new coal and gas projects.

The IPCC 1.5C report published last October made it clear we need to rapidly phaseout coal, and make rapid major transformations across all sectors of the economy such as agriculture, transport and stationary energy to meet the 1.5C Paris climate target.

Building bridges with LEAN on climate and Adani coal

While in Wills our Federal Labor MP Peter Khalil has publicly opposed the Adani mine, we are interested in moving the ALP to a stronger position with regard to the Adani Carmichael mine. We have written to the Labor Environment Action Network (LEAN) to see if we can assist in this regard.

Firstly, we would like to find out LEAN’s position on the issue of Adani’s Carmichael mine. Does LEAN oppose the mine? If not, why not? If so, what is LEAN doing about it and how is LEAN proposing to use Labor Party processes to get Labor to adopt the only environmentally responsible position on the project – i.e. that the mine is so dangerous to humanity that it must never be built?

We welcome the valuable policy and lobbying work being done by LEAN members inside the ALP on climate policy. We have requested a meeting with a LEAN delegation based in Melbourne to discuss strategy, and to find areas of potential overlap and support.
