Local Moreland Climate Groups call for end to global fossil fuel addiction feeding Putin’s Ukraine invasion

Moreland Climate and environmental groups joined Ukraine energy and civil society organizations and over 500 organisations globally in 51 countries for an end to the “global fossil fuel addiction that feeds Putin’s war machine”.
Local Moreland signatories to the Stand with Ukraine statement included: Australian Conservation Foundation Community Melbourne NxNW, Climate Action Moreland, Neighbours United for Climate Action (NUCA). Signatories to the letter come from around the world, including Climate Action Network International, World Council of Churches, Center for International Environmental Law, Sierra Club, MoveOn, Christian Aid, Rainforest Action Network and 350.org.
The statement presents the case that “The invasion of Ukraine by Russian Federation forces under the direction of Vladimir Putin is a clear war against Ukrainian sovereignty and independence as well as a grave violation of human rights, international law, and global peace.”
Further, it makes the link between Russia’s fossil fuel production and the climate crisis, making several demands of people and nations outside the Ukraine:
(more…)Open letter to Australian Government on Asian Development Bank funding new fossil fuel projects

Climate Action Moreland joined 34 other civil society organisations, including Neighbours United for Climate Action (NUCA), to sign an open letter addressed to Federal Ministers and Labor Party Shadow Ministers urging the Australian government to stop pushing support of coal and gas related projects in the negotiation of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) new energy policy.
Both the International Energy Agency Roadmap to 2050 released in May 2021 and the IPCC 6th climate change assessment report released in August 2021 makes clear we cannot afford ANY new fossil fuel projects to be funded consistent with the Paris Agreement agreed targets.
Neighbours United for Climate Action also signed the open letter.
“Since the Paris Agreement, the ADB has financed at least $4.9 billion in fossil fuels, almost all of which (96%) has gone to gas. The ADB cannot be a climate leader without a clear end to gas finance.” says an analysis of the Draft Energy policy done by Fossil Free ADB.

Climate Disater Levy on Fossil Fuel Exports
Moreland Council voted unanimously at the March 2021 Council Meeting to advocate to the Premier of Victoria to request his support and advocacy for a Federal Climate Disaster Levy, as proposed by The Australia Institute.
This was included in a Councillor nominated motion on Climate Risk and preparing the Council Plan. Assessing Climate risk and formulating climate policy directions to reduce emissions, and protect citizens, will be an important consideration as the new Council formulates its 4 year Council Plan.
There was also a report presented on draft zero carbon planning reforms that was supported by Council. The Design Excellence Scorecard trial will also continue to its conclusion in September 2021.

Climate Angels lead End of Coal Parade
Climate Action Moreland are active in various events and protests such as this End of Coal parade last Thursday in Melbourne.
Melbourne climate activists staged an “End of Coal” parade on August 13. They were celebrating the Commonwealth Bank’s decision to cancel its involvement with Adani’s Galilee coal proposals. They called on all Australia’s Banks to stop investing in fossil fuels.
Dressed in party gear, singing anti-coal songs and performing theatrics, the activists visited the Commonwealth Bank to congratulate them on their decision. They then visited ANZ, NAB and Westpac branches across Melbourne’s CBD, urging them to follow in the Commonwealth Bank’s footsteps by ruling out involvement in Galilee coal. Many bank staff were rather bemused; others got a little cranky at having their banks occupied.
Horticulturalist and Climate Angel Bronwyn Plarre said: “Commonwealth Bank has responded to community action and ceased their relationship with Adani. It’s now time for all of Australia’s other Big Banks to end their relationship with all fossil fuels. We’re here today to deliver a message, on behalf of the community, calling for exactly that.”
