Samantha Ratnam: Green New Deal for Victoria


On Wednesday the Legislative Council passed a motion for a Green New deal for Victoria. This motion was put forward by the Greens Leader Samantha Ratnam (Northern Metropolitan) and was supported by the Labor Party and by crossbench MPs. It comes just two weeks before the Victorian state budget will be delivered.

Samantha Ratnam is a former Councillor and Mayor of Moreland.

Congratulations to Samantha Ratnam, Leader of the Greens, in putting this motion forward; and for the Labor Party and crossbench MPs, including Fiona Patten from Northern Metropolitan Region, for supporting it.

Inquiry on achieving 100 percent renewables passed by Victorian State Parliament

The Victorian Parliament on Wednesday supported a Greens motion in the Legislative Council, looking at pathways for Victoria to be powered by 100 per cent clean energy, including the economic and employment benefits of such an energy transition.

Victoria currently has a 50 per cent renewables target by 2030. Coal currently provides 70 per cent of the state’s electricity.

The Inquiry won’t start until later in 2020 or early 2021, highlighted Samantha Ratnam in breaking the news in a Facebook post.

Wills MP Kelvin Thomson signs Pollution Free Politics Pledge

Our current Federal MP for Wills, Kelvin Thomson, has signed the Pollution Free Politics pledge.

We applaud this leadership By Kelvin Thomson. But as Kelvin is retiring at the 2016 Federal election we call upon all candidates in Wills to make this pledge. Current declared candidates are Peter Kahlil for the Labor Party and Samantha Ratnam for the Greens.

THE PLEDGE
I personally support, and call on all politicians and parties to support:
• a ban on donations from fossil fuel companies, and
• a ban on subsidies to fossil fuel companies.
