Protest at Coburg Tradelink Plumbing: a local link to Adani coal mine

Protesting Adani at Tradelink Coburg

On Saturday Climate Action Moreland participated in an action outside Tradelink Plumbing Supplies in Sussex Street, Coburg. It was one of at least 25 protests around Australia tyargeting Tradelink. Tradelink is owned by Fletcher Building, a New Zealand multinational which is seeking contracts to supply materials for construction of the Adani Carmichael coal mine.

We were encouraging customers to boycott the store in future. When we arrived we went inside and spoke briefly to the staff and gave them information on our protest, and urged them to pass our message up the line.

More climate ambition and Stop Adani a clear message from Wills Climate Forum to Mark Butler and Peter Khalil

Wills Climate Forum

Wills Labor MP Peter Khalil finally was able to organise a climate forum for his electorate centred on the City of Moreland, with shadow minister for climate and energy Mark Butler MP attending.

It was clear from the audience questions that although Labor is on the right track with climate policy, many citizens of Moreland think more ambition is needed given the climate crisis and the need for climate emergency planning. This was made clear by the most recent science in the IPCC 1.5C report published in October 2018. Most also want to see a clear statement and commitment to stop the Adani mine, and in fact any new coal or gas projects.

Students want to meet Bill Shorten, but his staffers hung up on them

Kids strike for climate outside Bill Shorten’s office

Who could resist talking to these polite kids? Well they phoned Bill Shorten’s office last Friday (Feb 8) while outside (I was there and heard the call), and the staffer hung up on them, then put the office phone line on Messagebank.

Bill Shorten should make a time to listen to the kids and their grievances and demands. That should be an essential part of his duties as an MP, Leader of the Opposition, and Prospective future Prime Minister. As a former Union leader he should know that strikers demands should at the very minimum be listened too, and that should have been an essential part of his former job to represent those demands to employers.

Come on Bill, give these kids a hearing so they can discuss the climate crisis, their future and put their basic demands to you.

Snap Action: #StopAdani Saturday 8 December

Treat the climate crisis as a crisis – Stop Adani

The fight to stop Adani’s coal mine is at a critical turning point.

The coal corporation has announced that they are self financing the project, and want to start digging coal before Christmas. By Adani saying that they have the money to start work immediately, it looks like they are trying to pressure the government to wrap up the approvals process before the next federal election.

Which means we need to put pressure on our politicians to act now.

Labor wins Reef climate change motion, but remained silent on Adani and coal

Vote on Adani in HoR: Cathy McGowan, Adam Bandt, Andrew Wilkie vote to #stopAdani. Photo via @WilkieMP

The Liberal National Party government lost a motion in the House of Representatives of our Federal Parliament yesterday. Amid all this crisis over dual citizenship and section 44 of the constitution that has now embroiled Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce, the Government were unable to muster the numbers and lost 61 votes against to 69 votes in favour. Read the full story at Climate Home.

The motion was on the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Amendment Bill 2017. The passage of the Bill provided an opportunity for amendments from both Labor and the Greens.

While Labor’s amendment highlighted the government’s failure to protect the Great Barrier reef from Climate Change, it was silent on the threat of the Adani coal project opening up the Galilee Basin (Read David Holmes on Australia’s climate bomb: the senselessness of Adani’s Carmichael coal mine), and other new mines such as Glencore’s Wandoan mine in the Surat basin that has just been approved by the Queensland Labor Government.

Commbank rules out funding Adani Carmichael coal mine

Commonwealth Bank announces will not fund Adani

In a statement today the Commonwealth Bank effectively ruled out funding for the giant Adani Carmichael coal mine. This is a win for the broad campaign to stop Adani.

A Commonwealth Bank spokesperson said, “We have been asked about our role in funding the Adani Carmichael mine. Whilst in general we do not comment on specific clients, we can confirm that we are not amongst the banks who have been, or will be, asked to consider this financing,” according to an Australian Financial Review report.

Perhaps Climate Action Moreland’s little action at the Glenroy Branch tipped the scales?
