Primary school students march for climate action in Brunswick West #climatestrike

“This is the beginning of your lives as climate warriors” Moreland’s Mayor Cr Abboud told Brunswick North West Primary school kids at a local event in conjunction with #climatestrike in Brunswick on Friday March 15.

The event was organised near Brunswick North West Primary school by parents and kids at the school. Climate strike students visit Peter Khalil MP in Coburg

Climate Strike students visit Peter Khalil MP in Coburg

On Friday 22 February climate strike students from Castlemaine paid a visit to Moreland’s Federal Labor MP, Peter Khalil, at his Coburg office.

Peter Khalil has signed the climate emergency and also stated he opposes the Adani coal mine going ahead.

But the primary demands of the student climate strikers go beyond stopping Adani. They also include a target of 100 per cent renewables by 2030, and no new coal and gas projects.

The IPCC 1.5C report published last October made it clear we need to rapidly phaseout coal, and make rapid major transformations across all sectors of the economy such as agriculture, transport and stationary energy to meet the 1.5C Paris climate target.

Students want to meet Bill Shorten, but his staffers hung up on them

Kids strike for climate outside Bill Shorten’s office

Who could resist talking to these polite kids? Well they phoned Bill Shorten’s office last Friday (Feb 8) while outside (I was there and heard the call), and the staffer hung up on them, then put the office phone line on Messagebank.

Bill Shorten should make a time to listen to the kids and their grievances and demands. That should be an essential part of his duties as an MP, Leader of the Opposition, and Prospective future Prime Minister. As a former Union leader he should know that strikers demands should at the very minimum be listened too, and that should have been an essential part of his former job to represent those demands to employers.

Come on Bill, give these kids a hearing so they can discuss the climate crisis, their future and put their basic demands to you.
