Congratulations to Lizzie Blandthorn and Tim Read being elected to #springst
The Victorian state election is over and two of Moreland’s state MP’s signed the climate emergency declaration during the campaign: Labor’s Lizzie Blandthorn in Pascoe Vale, and the Greens Tim Read in Brunswick.
The first important step for our elected representatives is to acknowledge the problem, that we have a climate crisis, a climate emergency, that requires a level of emergency climate planning and action.
We are glad and congratulate that two of our three Legislative Assembly representatives have acknowledged the problem and in the coming four years expect they will act in their respective parties and in parliament to ramp up climate action consistent with climate science and climate targets. The citizens of Moreland expect nothing less.

Vote Climate in the Victorian state election 2018
Our index page for the Victorian state election in 2018 and our campaign on climate change and climate action. Climate Action Moreland campaigns on climate issues for the state electorates of Brunswick, Pascoe Vale and Broadmeadows, and the Northern Metro Region (Upper House).
Update Note: 29 November: Brunswick count continuing with the Greens candidate Tim Read 350 votes ahead of Labor’s Cindy O’Connor. Pascoe Vale count continuing with sitting MP Labor’s Lizzie Blandthorn likely to be easily returned on preferences. Pascoe Vale was previously a safe Labor seat.
In the Upper House it is likely the Greens will be reduced from 5 MLCs to just 1 MLC (Samantha Ratnam), due to the tight preferencing of minor parties using group voting tickets. The Counting is continuing for the Legislative Council.

Sovereign indigenous clans ifrom Taungurong, Wurundjeri and Gunai Kurnai statement on sovereignty, land and forests
Aboriginal clans and families from the Taungurong, Wurundjeri and Gunai Kurnai peoples read a statement on sovereignty, land use and forests which called for a moratorium on the logging of Victorian forests by the Victorian Government. Conservation of Victoria’s native forests raises concerns over presercving our water, a safe climate and preventing species extinction.
The statement was met with a standing ovation from the packed crowd in the Brunswick Town Hall who had come to hear and discuss the Future of Victoria’s Forests in an event organised by Brunswick Friends of the forests.

The Victorian Minister for Energy signed on to the climate emergency declaration.
At the Brunswick prepoll station for the Victorian election the Energy Minister Lily D’Ambrosio was handing out How to Vote cards for Brunswick Labor Candidate Cindy O’Connor.
As Cindy has already signed the climate emergency declaration, I asked Ms D’Ambrosio if she would consider signing the declaration. After a short period considering the request, she accepted and signed the declaration.

Transport Policy in Moreland for the Climate Emergency
Climate Emergency
The Paris Climate Agreement aspirational target limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees is starting to look unachievable. Even meeting the hard target of 2 degrees, which will still result in huge damage (e.g. probable loss of the Great Barrier Reef), will require governments everywhere to lift their game.
We are pleased to hear that Moreland Council acknowledged we are in a state of climate emergency at the Council meeting on 12 September 2018.
We note Moreland Council’s community emissions reduction policies and targets for 2020 and 2040. Transport is one of the largest sources of greenhouse emissions, amounting to 25.8 per cent of emissions in Moreland in 2013-14. Governments at all levels need to lift their game.
Greenhouse Emissions from Transport
Transport is one of the largest sources of greenhouse emissions, amounting to 19 per cent Australia wide, and 25.8 per cent of emissions in Moreland in 2013-14. Here too, governments at all levels need to lift their game.
Major Change in Priorities for Transport Infrastructure
At the state level we think a major shift is needed in Transport infrastructure funding. In 2018 Roads funding was 69.1 per cent, Public Transport 30.5 per cent and Active Transport just 0.36 per cent. There needs to be a major priority change in this area to meet climate targets.
